Cold, pouring rain couldn't stop Kidwell from Asheville Biltmore Marathon challenge
Renee Kidwell has proven once again that she's "superwoman."
This past Saturday, March 16, she not only ran 26.2 miles in the second annual Asheville Biltmore Marathon, but she did it in 40-degree temperatures and pouring rain. With neighbors Carol Fife and Yvette Freeman as her support and cheering team, Renee crossed the finish line in 4 hours, 51 minutes, 11 seconds, ranking 193 out of 330 marathoners. In addition, she came in third place in the women's 55-59 age group! The marathon was held on the grounds of the Asheville Biltmore Estate, near Antler Hill Village Congratulations Renee on yet another great finish! |

Grady Nance wins top prize in local chili cook off
by Kathleen Nance
On Saturday, March 1, the Green River Community Association held its 2nd annual Chilly Chili Cook-Off and tasting at the Tuxedo Park. The event is a benefit to support the establishment of a community park on the location. Attendees were able to taste an amazing variety of chilis created by local cooks and vote for their favorites. In addition, a panel of judges picked a first, second, and third place chili.
Pinnacle Falls was well represented with two entries. Linda Brett and Greg Meuwissen offered a delicious spicy variation of Ancho Beef Chili with Beans, and Grady Nance cooked up his Glacier Bay Lodge Wilderness Chili. Many of the tasters came back for seconds from both offerings. The Wilderness Chili came from a recipe Grady received when he was vacationing at Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska 30 years ago. The lodge served a tasty chili and, when asked, was glad to share their recipe with Grady. Apparently the judges agreed with Grady that the chili was good, as they picked it for first place! At the cook-off we had a beautiful day to be out, as well as good chance to meet and talk with many of our neighbors on the mountain. |
Open wide and smile, this won't hurt a bit
by Greg Meuwissen
On February 25th, at Cummings Cove Golf Course, Grady Nance, Mike Spreng, and Greg Meuwissen were out for a round of golf. They played the back nine first, then played the front nine. On hole #2, a 130-yard par 3, Grady posted a challenge to the other two when he hit his tee shot to within a foot and a half of the hole. The good doctor Spreng, however, decided to put on a dental clinic by drilling his shot and filling the cavity in the green for the fourth hole-in-one of his golfing career. His technique was so flawless that he didn’t even need to use the green for this “crown”ing achievement. His shot just barely grazed the edge of the hole on the way into the cup. Greg managed to stumble in with a par (one of the few highlights of his day), so the scorecard reflected scores of 1-2-3. Mike was floating as if on laughing gas, Grady was happy about getting a birdie and witnessing a hole-in-one, and Greg is still grumbling about shooting a par and getting waxed.
